‘Petite Ecole Kentoise’ School Fete 29th March 2008
On the 29th of March, in the Hall of Harrietsham primary school, we are organising a school fete which will be a fund raising event, as well as a great opportunity to meet with the bilingual community in the Kent area.
At 11am, there will be a small conference on the education and development of bilingual children with professionals coming to give short presentations and answer parents’ questions. Guests will include:
- Rebecca Ratchford, from Canterbury University- she will present her work on bilingual French families in Kent.
- Diane Ferdenzi, French speech therapist – she will present a short talk about bilingualism and speech acquisition.
- Ben Hayes, educational psychologist working for Kent County Council (to be confirmed).
- Fiona Godfrey, sessional teacher of French of the School of European Culture and Languages at University of Kent, Canterbury
We will have the pleasure to receive a special guest from the French embassy, M. Michel Monsauret, Conseiller Culturel Adjoint, Attaché de Coopération Educative de l’Ambassade de France.
At 12am, there will be a short presentation of our school with a mini show, courtesy of our pupils. We will serve a ‘Verre de l’Amitié’ (i.e. friendship drink) and our teachers will give some feedback about what we have been up to and what we are expecting to achieve in the future.
From 12.45 am will follow a ‘Kermesse’, i.e. fête with games and activities: Face painting, Coconut shy, Lucky-dip, Wellie throwing competition, ‘Panier garni’ (i.e. guess the weight of the basket), balloon race, cake and sweets sale; profits will go to the PEK charity to support our work in the development of the school.
A parent-teacher meeting will be held at the same time as the fete, to discuss progress of the children on a one-to-one basis.
A raffle will also take place with great prizes, including:
- A number of return ferry tickets to France;
- ‘Key to the Castle’ tickets to Leeds Castle;
- Vouchers off local shop in Lenham (Bow Window Hairdresser, BowJangles gifts and Accessories, butchers and fishmongers);
- Vouchers to the Green Health Club, a gym in Charing;
- Vouchers for Wear ‚M’ Out (indoor activity centre in Maidstone);
- Watches, games for children and much, much more...
A minimum donation of £1/adult will be requested at the door. There will be an individual charge for other activities taking place during the fete. Visitors will be able to buy a book of tickets to take part in these activities (£5 for 10 tickets).
Catering will be arranged although visitors will also be able to bring their own picnic.
Usborne books will be invited to have a book stand. It will be possible to use your ‘World Book Day £1 Book Tokens’ that many children will have received through their schools.
All children are invited to come fancy-dressed on a ‘France‘ theme.
The day will be concluded at 3.30 pm by the raffle draw and the announcement of the winners of the wellie throwing competition and ‘Panier Garni’.
The day will be particularly relevant to all bilingual families in Kent, whether French speaking or not. You are welcome to bring your family along (grand parents etc) so that they can find out what our little ones are up to and understand better the world of multilingualism!!
As the school has limited spaces, could you please let us know in advance whether you will come along (and how many of you, children and adults) and whether you would be interested in eating there so that we can organise the catering accordingly.
Also, baby sitting will be organised on site to look after the little ones during the conference. If you need this service, we will ask for a further donation of £1. We will need to know in advance please.

We hope to see you there!!

Petite Ecole Kentoise
French Saturday school for bilingual French children
‘Petite Ecole Kentoise’ is the initiative of a few local bilingual French/English families. The aim is to further the knowledge of the French language for French speaking children living in Kent.
We are running a 2.5 hours Saturday school for children aged 3 years to 11 (our first day was 12 January 2008). The lessons are taught by French teachers. The topics deal with traditions, geography or history of French speaking countries. The children are in groups of similar abilities, with the older children learning points of grammar and the younger children doing activities around the same theme.

The lessons take place at Harrietsham Primary School as most member families currently come from the Maidstone and Ashford areas but we will be happy to organise similar sessions elsewhere in the county, should more families be interested.

Families are welcome to come for a taster session, prior to signing up for a full term but please contact us first.
